Bob,

That's a great question. Here are a few thoughts:

In Malachi 3:10 we are told to bring the whole tithe in the storehouse. This word storehouse in the Old Testament was a place that the grain and animal offerings were brought by the people. In turn the keepers of the storehouse (the Levites) would use the offerings to care for the widows, orphans and poor.

In today's time we can often equate the local Church as the storehouse that serves others. As well, to function and operate a Church is in a sense "dependent" on the giving of others.

To really answer your question, on a pure biblical interpretation, there may not be a concrete verse that tells us where to give the tithe. Personally I do give my first fruits tithe to the local Church, because I believe that the storehouse of today is the Church, or at least should strive to be.

Often, it may be difficult for the Church to be as much of a storehouse because of the lack of giving by the congregation. Also, I enjoy giving my tithe to the local Church because I believe that I should support first my local teachers and encouragers (see Gal. 6:6).

I hope this was helpful and I have listed two links below to help as resources for your question.

I understand the concept of the tithe and giving above the 10%. I do admit that giving sacrificially has been something that I struggle with and pray that God will change my heart. One question that I've always had about the tithe is on the subject of where should it go. I have always believed that it should go to any of the many ministries that God has placed on my heart to give to. However, I have heard a few pastors preach (including my current church) that the full 10% should go to the local church and that any causes you wish to give to outside the local church should be above the tithe. Can you comment on any biblical basis for this teaching of giving the full 10% to the local church rather than giving a portion of the tithe to the local church and a portion to other Godly ministries?

Awesome analysis! Thank you for advocating less debt! Exactly the point; as we spend more than we take in, requiring debt, the less we can be used by God to bless others.
